Living Light Center, Fort Bragg

The Living Light Center, a 5,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility located within the historic Fort Bragg Company Store, is designed to provide the latest advances in raw culinary education, and includes a professional kitchen with a sprouting/dehydration room, a fruit-ripening room, and a pantry. Solar Living Institute, Hopland

The Solar Living Center is a world-famous demonstration site for renewable energy, alternative fuels, green building, permaculture, and sustainable living technologies.  The Solar Living Center is open seven days a week and 362 days per year (closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day) and admission is free to the general public, with donations encouraged.

The Geysers Geothermal Visitor Center, Middle Town

Middletown Learn about the world’s largest geothermal energy source - The Geysers. In the late 1800s, Lake County’s Cobb Mountain was a mecca for spa-goers who came from far and wide to take the waters at the areas hot springs. Today, the area is home to the largest complex of geothermal plants on earth, encompassing a portfolio of 19 geothermal power plants fed by more than 350 wells, producing enough clean, renewable energy to power 850,000 homes.

Taylor Observatory, Kelseyville

Kelseyville With a 16-inch computer-controlled telescope under a dome, a classroom, and a planetarium, Taylor Observatory offers informative and educational activities that promote an interest in and learning of astronomy for young and old alike. Because of Lake County’s pristine air quality, lack of coastal fog, and distance from large urban areas, viewing the night sky is spectacular here.

Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary, Arcata

It’s a major bird watching destination and venue for outdoor recreation—but it’s also an innovative, low-tech wastewater treatment plant for the City of Arcata. Visit the Interpretive Center to learn how this award-winning facility works.

Directions: Exit Hwy. 101 at Samoa Blvd; west to South G St., left ½ miles

to the Marsh, or turn left on I St. and follow to Klopp Lake.



Telonicher Marine Laboratory, Trinidad

In addition to aquariums and a tide pool touch tank, this Humboldt State University facility demonstrates a working application of the solar-hydrogen cycle. A photovoltaic array and hydrogen fuel cells provide reliable power to the lab’s blowers.
