The Point Arena-Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument, just south of the Point Arena lighthouse in Mendocino County, includes almost 1700 wild, undisturbed acres of California coastline.

On Tuesday, March 11 2014 President Obama added Point Arena’s Stornetta Public Lands to the California Coastal National Monument, protecting this magical coastal resource. The California Coastal National Monument is one of the most-viewed national monuments in California although people are usually not aware that they are viewing a national monument. The Stornetta Lands area encompasses the estuary of the Garcia river. It offers gorgeous views to the north and south, great hiking paths, opportunities to see migrating whales, and an abundance of birds and other wildlife on and off shore. The public is allowed to use the land for bird watching, fishing, picnicking, nature photography, and wildlife observation.
